YouTube’s stature as the homepage for internet video has turned it into the most commonly used social platform by US adults.
That’s according to a recent study published Wednesday by the Pew Research Center about social media use, which found that 81% of US adults surveyed had used YouTube, a significant jump from the 73% of respondents who said they used the video-sharing platform in 2019. That makes it the most popular social network among respondents, with social media juggernaut Facebook in second place and Instagram a distant third.
YouTube’s place as most popular social network is not new — it has been No. 1 since Pew started surveying YouTube use in 2018 — but as YouTube’s prevalence continues to grow across age groups, Facebook’s use has plateaued in recent years, with 69% of respondents saying they had used the platform. Americans over the age of 65, however, still slightly preferred Facebook over YouTube.
