RICHFIELD — The 1A boys golf tournament at Cove View Golf Course offered few surprises as Valley successfully defended its state title for the fifth consecutive time.
Valley’s boys combined for a 697 team score, beating second place Rich by 34 strokes.
Leading the way for Valley was Casey Reck, who shot a two-day total of 159 to claim the individual first-place medal.
“Today I was able to make longer putts, but yesterday I got to the green faster,” Reck said.
Reck grew up on his parents’ Thunderbird Golf Course, which is the home links for the Buffalos.
“Golf has been there my whole life,” Reck said. “I love the game. I love the focus you need to play it.”
It wasn’t an easy victory, as Milford junior Zach Sherwood finished the course just one stroke behind Reck. The two have been pushing each other throughout the season.
“It’s been pretty awesome,” Sherwood said. “I thought I had him, but when he sank that last putt, I knew he had it.”
“We knew it would be a dogfight between those two,” said Ferril Heaton, Valley’s coach. “They’re both great golfers.”
Heaton said Reck’s dedication to the game goes above and beyond.
